 The future is now
increasingly losing market share and posi- tioning. Recognising the need for change, the industry developed a $64 million 7-year transformation programme that has been enormously successful. While there is still erce competition day to day, the strategy helped collaboration to address long- standing issues.
Just get started
Scott told attendees at The fog will lift session that success in industry transforma- tion was just about getting started. For the beef and lamb industry, this meant getting people in the room time and time again to have the conversation about where there might be shared interests.
As he put it, ‘Industry leaders who typically compete day to day must come together in the same room regularly to identify both the issues that need to be addressed and also develop the actions and projects that can address them. Over time through this process, they build trust, and it changes the quality of conversations about how to realise change. New areas can be explored as this trust builds.’
Focus on things you agree on
Scott encouraged leaders to have an opportunity mindset, not a problem one, and focus time and energy on areas where the sector can nd agreement. He cited a moment of realisation in the Beef + Lamb journey where they realised they were spending their time debating the 10–20% of things they disagreed on. The lesson – focus instead on the 80–90% of things on which you agree.
This is common in the building and contruction industry as well. We also tend to focus on telling others what they should do to x things rather than talking about the skills, resources and passion we can contribute.
Through the ITA Leadership Forum activi- ties, we’ll continue to provide opportunities to learn from other transformation leaders to generate fresh perspectives and insights.
Resources for building leadership
Tools and resources are also being developed to support leaders to make the creative and brave leaps forward required. ITA leaders will need to be able to challenge the status quo, to listen and not shut down challenging conver- sations and to be prepared to try new ways and means. Our networking and connection opportunities aim to help grow the culture of collaboration and knowledge sharing.
What is the ITA?
THE INDUSTRY Transformation Agenda (ITA) is a call to action for everyone in the industry
to drive genuine change together. We want the industry to be:
● agile
● resilient
● recognised for its quality and efficiency ● fit for the 21st century and beyond.
WHY TRANSFORM?
The building and construction industry has lagged behind other sectors in efficiency and productivity. New Zealand is far from alone in experiencing this – it’s a global problem.
The World Economic Forum has developed a worldwide construction Industry Transformation Framework to help address this. The New Zealand ITA has adopted and adapted this framework.
PRIORITY AREAS
In consultation with industry, the following six priority areas were chosen for urgent action:
Improve risk management.
Increase the flow of information and data. Share learning across the sector. Successfully adopt new technologies. Create predictable planning systems (for example, for workstream security). Embrace the NextGen workforce.
The ITA Leadership Forum is one example of doing things differently to tackle the challenges faced as an industry. We need to be brave and willing to experiment with new approaches. The experiments won’t always work, but if we work together to try di erent ways, we have a better chance of transforming our industry and creating a better future for everyone it touches.
A small number of projects aligned to some of these priorities have been identified from work undertaken with the industry. Project scopes are being refined. These should be ready to share with industry in the next 4–6 weeks with a call- out for industry participants.
WHO’S BEHIND IT?
The idea of an initiative to leverage the World Economic Forum Industry Transformation Framework was raised by BRANZ in early 2017. The industry response was so positive that ve industry leaders were brought together as a core design team to accelerate the concept.
The core design team was made up of
Chelydra Percy, BRANZ Chief Executive; David Kelly, Registered Master Builders Association Chief Executive; Connal Townsend, NZ Property Council Chief Executive; Warwick Quinn, BCITO Chief Executive; and Matt Crockett, former Chief Executive of Fletcher Building Products. BRANZ
is currently leading the start-up programme and providing the initial resources for events, tools and communication to help build momentum.
