   Leading future change
There is no debate that a better future for the building and construction industry is needed. For that to happen, we have to do things di erently. The Industry Transformation Agenda is leading meaningful change.
BY CHELYDRA PERCY, BRANZ CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
The future is now
THE INDUSTRY Transformation Agenda (ITA) is unashamedly ambitious. Its scope is enormous, and its aims are bold. It is a call to action to those who believe that the industry can change and want to be part of making that change happen. Everyone working in our sector can contribute to industry transformation, although the ITA isn’t waiting for everyone to sign up.
The ITA needs leaders and leadership to get the ball rolling. To e ect transformation requires leaders to coordinate, champion and provide resources. We need people able to lead organisations, lead systems, lead conver- sations and lead communities to change.
Championing transformation
That’s where the ITA Leadership Forum comes in. The forum’s overall aim is to build a group of leaders passionate about driving and supporting change. The forum will champion one consistent idea – that industry leaders must drive its transformation.
The highly successful Business Leaders’ Health and Safety Forum was used as a refer- ence for the shape of the forum. Gaining such inspiration and modelling from other industries and transformation experts will be a key part of our own system-wide change.
Forum thought leaders
To kickstart the ITA Leadership Forum programme in 2018, we’ve engaged three di erent and interesting thought leaders to share with the forum:
● Dr Scott Champion, in his presentation The fog will lift, shared lessons from leading a successful programme of transformation in the primary sector. Scott spent 10 years leading the beef and lamb industry transfor- mation. As Chief Executive, he drove Beef + Lamb New Zealand transformation into a customer-focused organisation, deeply engaged with farmers and stakeholders.
● Mark Farmer will discuss the need to rethink our industry’s future. A recognised
commentator and thought leader, Mark is the author of a 2016 UK Government review on the need for change in UK construction – Modernise or die: Time to decide the industry’s future.
● Sir Ken Robinson is a creativity and innovation leader who, throughout his career, has been dedicated to transforming perceptions of creativity and how we cultivate creativity in businesses, schools and other organisations. He is also one of the world’s leading speakers, with his TED Talks videos being the most viewed in the history of the organisation.
Learning from other industries
Dr Scott Champion’s event had just taken place as Build went to print. It was a particularly inspiring session as we grapple with building momentum around the ITA.
Ten years ago, the beef and lamb industry was in crisis. It was fragmented and ercely competitive, and New Zealand was
