Penetrations through the wall cladding

Often, the key to getting a detail correct on site is following the correct sequence of construction tasks.

Pipes and other penetrations through the wall must be sealed to the wall underlay. This ensures that any water that reaches the underlay through the wall cladding flows around the pipe or penetration rather than going through the hole that has been neatly cut in the underlay.

Taping around the penetration (see Figure 1) cannot be done properly if a hole for the penetration is cut after the wall cladding has been installed.

Construction sequence

Step 1 – Install the wall underlay.

Step 2 – Construct the penetration, using a sleeve if pipes are to be installed later.

Step 3 – Install the wall cladding.
