Workloads in the industry are at historically high levels, creating a strong demand for skilled labour. Looking forward, what effect will building practitioner licensing have on workloads and how many workers will it affect?
Since 1975 the masonry trade has had a registration scheme setting standards of achievement in structural masonry. This scheme will provide the foundation for setting the competencies for licensed building practitioners in brick and blocklaying.
Building officials in New Zealand currently do not require a licence or a qualification to inspect building work – under the 2004 Act only builders will need to be licensed. But a voluntary licensing programme has now been initiated for officials in the building sector.
