From the Editor Extremes
WHAT A WONDERFUL SUMMER we’ve had. It seemed like weeks of endless sun, heat and very little wind, a special treat for us in Wellington. I recently rediscovered my love of tramping, so I’ve thoroughly enjoyed nding new tracks to explore and hills to climb.
NIWA records show February was the second-hottest month ever recorded. Great for some, but not for Canterbury farmers like my brother.
GET IN
It is another indicator of our changing climate with extreme weather events occurring more frequently. Extreme weather is just one of the wide-ranging natural hazards that present a risk to our built environment. Hazards such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, high winds and oods associated with storms, and rising sea levels.
TOUCH
We’ve taken a two-pronged approach to hazards in our feature on pages 40–61. We cover several key natural hazards that threaten our built environment and some of the health and safety hazards that put workers in the building industry at risk. What can we do to manage the risks and how can we make our built environment more resilient?
On the health side, statistics show that, for every person who dies in a workplace incident, 10 people are likely to die from a workplace-induced health condition. A sobering thought and one that needs to bring change.
We review the key changes introduced with the Health and Safety at Work Act on 4 April. There is also advice when removing asbestos-containing material (see pages 42–45) or working with dangerous chemicals and solvents (see pages 46–47).
As the days get shorter and the temperature drops, I hope you nd some useful advice in this Build. And don’t forget, all Build articles are also available free online at www.buildmagazine.nz. If you haven’t seen this website yet, go and have a look.
