WE THOUGHT the last 2 years were tough, but 2022 seems to be throwing us even more challenges ... and it’s only March. Omicron, war in Ukraine, rising costs, supply chain issues and now staff shortages made worse by the number of people with COVID-19 or isolating with their household.

As we continue to adjust to this new normal, we have certainly had to develop resilience and flexibility. I’m trying to make the most of opportunities as who knows what will be next. Hopefully, as this Build was printed, I was on several Great Walks in Fiordland. As I write this though, only a couple of days beforehand, I type with fingers crossed hoping I won’t have to stay home and isolate instead.

This Build, we look at innovations in three building materials at the heart of our industry – concrete, timber and steel. Each has its own characteristics and strengths that mean they continue to be integral to our buildings. They are adapting to our changing world, and we share some of these innovations, particularly around reducing carbon emissions.

With so much bad news lately, it feels good to celebrate some successes in our second feature. Going to work each day is about more than just earning a living. When we do our job well, we can help create better outcomes for people. Builders, designers, engineers, building officials, tradies – are you helping to create healthy houses you are proud of? Homes where tamariki (children) can flourish and elderly feel warm and safe?

At BRANZ, we are proud of our mahi (work), our research and our advice that informs changes to building standards and legislation. I am proud of each Build we produce and hope that the information in these pages helps you to build something that you too can be proud of.
