Immersed in the future
RECENTLY, I TOOK my family along to the Future Playground that was on in Wellington as part of the NZ Festival. For a few hours, we were immersed in an interactive world of digital technology. The virtual and augmented reality experiences were amazing, and they left us all wanting more.
    GET IN
Coincidentally, in this Build, we look at some of the same technology (and more) and how it is being applied to building and construction (see pages 63–74), from digital fabrication to on-site robotics and augmented reality. We also look at the wider application of building information modelling (BIM) through digital asset management systems and have a sneak peek at some of the potentially signi cant developments that are appearing in materials and composites.
TOUCH
Another change transforming our urban environments is the rapid increase in medium-density housing in response to population growth, immigation, demographic and lifestyle changes, and a need for more a ordable housing. From comprising just 19% of new housing in 2013, this rose to 25% in 2017 and it is expected to be one-third of all new housing by 2025.
BRANZ has a programme of work under way to support this growth in medium-density housing. Among other things, researchers are investigating technical challenges such as re ratings, acoustics, airtightness and weathertightness of claddings as they speci cally relate to medium-density housing (see pages 39–60).
This Build also has plenty of other research results (see pages 76–87) and a range of Build Right and Design Right articles (pages 26–35). I hope you nd something in this issue that interests you and helps you in your work to build better buildings for New Zealanders.
