BRANZ Facts
BRANZ has developed two new series of factsheets on medium-density housing and mid-rise buildings.
WITH INCREASING pressure on New Zealand’s building stock, medium-density housing (MDH) has emerged as an attractive option to meet our changing housing needs.
A series of factsheets explores key trends and challenges in MDH construction. Titles include:
● Factsheet 1: What is medium-density
housing?
● Factsheet 2: Supply and demand
● Factsheet 3: Attitudes towards MDH
● Factsheet 4: Consents
● Factsheet 5: Acoustic performance
● Factsheet 6: Maintenance
● Factsheet 7: Fire safety.
Mid-rise buildings can be complex and are usually based on one-o speci c designs. These factsheets outline compliance options and identify issues. Titles include: ● Factsheet1:Whatarethey?
● Factsheet 2: Showing compliance
● Factsheet 3: Exposed issues – movement
control in concrete masonry
● Factsheet 4: Exposed issues – reinforcing
steel cover
● Factsheet 5: Exposed issues – steel
corrosion.

Roofs are important as the first line of defence against rain, hail, snow and wind entry
ROOF DESIGNS must be able to cope with expected rainfalls and wind pressure so that the drainage capacity of the roo ng, gutters, downpipes and stormwater drains is not exceeded.
The selection of a roo ng material, nish and pro le is a balance involving aesthetic, functional, durability, regulatory, structural, cost and environmental issues, as well as supply, installation, safety requirements and ongoing maintenance.
Roofs can provide years of relatively trouble-free service when the correct roo ng material for the expected use and environment is chosen, the roof itself has su cient pitch and is well detailed and constructed and maintenance is performed as required.
The aim of this resource is to identify and discuss the range of factors that need to be considered as part of the design and
material selection to achieve a successful roof.
Details Available for $32.50 from the BRANZ Shop at www.branz.co.nz or call 0800 80 80 85.
