An induction checklist helps to ensure that all areas are covered. It starts the employee o with the right information to ensure maximum productivity as quickly as possible and ful ls legal obligations to train the new worker in safe work practices.
An induction programme can vary from 1 day to 1 week or be staggered across months. Having regular check-ins during this time is invaluable to establish what is going well or not so well and what support might be needed. These don’t need to be in-depth sessions, but they establish a relationship of communication with the employee.
Key areas for induction
What are some key areas to include in an induction checklist? It’s more than just a
health and safety checklist. The following is a good start:
● An introduction to the company and
department and its personnel structure. ● A layout of the establishment or worksite. ● The terms and conditions of employment. ● Relevant personnel policies, such as
training and promotion.
● Health and safety.
● The business rules, guidelines and
procedures.
● Employee bene ts and facilities. Incorporating a thorough health and safety induction will help you meet your health and safety obligations under the required legisla- tion. If your health and safety policy and induction do not re ect the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, this is a timely prompt to look at what you are doing.
Document policies and procedures
Typically, a natural progression is from the content of the induction process to company guidelines, policies and procedures. These should be documented rather than taken for granted that people just know.
A good example is communicating to employees what you de ne as appropriate use of cellphones at work. Think about what needs to be documented to ensure a consistent message is being delivered. If there are protocols that are specific and important to your business, they need to be communicated.
